From soldier to Farrier

Diploma (Dip WCF)
This is the first qualification obtained. An apprenticeship is undertaken with an Approved Training Farrier (ATF) over a period of four years and two months. The culmination of the apprenticeship consists, of written, oral, and practical examinations.

Associateship (AWCF)
The next level after the Diploma is the Associate (AWCF) qualification. This is concerned with corrective farriery. To attain the AWCF a written exam, four oral examinations, and a practical examination to make two remedial shoes from plain steel and fit them to horses’ feet. Finally, an examination demonstrating knowledge of synthetic materials in the use of hoof care.

Master Farrier
The term Master Farrier is a trademark and can only be used by Associates and Fellows Oof the Worshipful Company of Farriers (WCF).

Graduate Diploma in Equine Locomotor Research (Grad DipELR) UK
The Graduate Diploma in Applied Equine Locomotor Research from the RVC offers professional farriers the chance to develop the skill set necessary to produce original research and increase the evidence base behind farriery.
